Sea of Glass— At the Foot of Heaven’s Throne
Photo of my backyard sparkly water
It’s sparkly water season around here, and I’m never more sure of heaven touching earth than when I’m watching water glitter. Brian asked me if he NEEDED to look at the water every single time I exclaimed over the sparkle because his eyes were starting to hurt. Cannot relate. I told him it was probably sin not to (I’M KIDDING).
The sparkly water in my backyard was the original inspiration for my piece, “Lake of Shining Waters”. I remember this moment as I was creating the piece when I couldn’t stop myself from seeing flecks of emerald in the water, so I added them, and I loved them…but until recently I wasn’t really sure why they needed to be there or what they were. People on the internet thought maybe they were glowing fish—kind of a cool concept, but I knew that wasn’t it.
It wasn’t until I started meditating on heaven—like, heaven in heaven, not heaven on earth—that it hit me—my piece, “Lake of Shining Waters” is my rendering of the Sea of Glass that sits at the foot of God’s throne in Heaven (Revelation 4:6). The emerald flecks? They’re the reflection of the throne on the sea. “A rainbow that looked like an emerald surrounded the throne,” (Revelation 4:3). I’m still dying to see what a rainbow that looks like an emerald looks like IRL.
Recently I had someone tell me they think I’ll be entering a season where I’m painting heaven without even realizing it, and I think they could be right. Maybe it’s already been happening…
Anyway, I know that the sparkle is the sun reflecting on the water, but sometimes I like to imagine the water as a mirror reflecting the realities of heaven. A mirror showing us exactly what we can expect.
I wonder if the glitter on the water speaks to me (and from what I can tell a lot of people) because it speaks to being at the foot of the throne of God—looking out upon the Sea of Glass. I’ve always claimed these are the moments where heaven is touching earth, and now, I’ve never been more sure. Whatever your thoughts on God, I believe heaven is in our hearts, the propensity towards God’s throne ever present (Ecclesiastes 3:11)—and the reason why glittering water will never grow old.
So, happy sparkly water season to all who celebrate, may the glitter guide you to the foot of the throne.
